Lake District Storm Proposal...

I picked this up... (4 days prior)
It all began Monday 20th January 2025, when I received a 'it's probably a long shot' text from an unknown number. Max Hewitson, reached out to me as he'd planned to propose to his long term girlfriend Georgia Xander-Edwards.
Whilst I wasn't Max's first selection, I was keen to know more about his plans; learning he'd recently been let down by another photographer. He expressed that he wanted to propose by Ullswater lake, as they were staying at The Inn On The Lake. Given the phenomenal scenery is Ullswater, and the fact Max was so down to earth, it was a no brainer so I got involved...
The truth is, it isn't always about being the first choice, it is about being the right choice.

Storm Eowyn... (Friday 24th January 2025)
Storm Éowyn was "probably the strongest storm" to hit the UK in at least 10 years, the Met Office has said, with wind gusts in excess of 100mph (160km/h).
From the Monday of committing to working with Max and Georgia, the weather warnings started to come in for a storm throughout most of the North West and Scotland, with poor Ireland taking a huge battering! Forecasted from Thursday evening through to Friday evening. I pride myself a great communication, and this was certainly a time that communication was key!
I reached out to Max, explaining I think the storm is going to be pretty rough, nevertheless, I was still keen to go ahead.
I made plans to travel very early on the Friday and work at the Inn on The Lake, until we found a fitting break in the horrendous weather for Max to get down on one knee!
Boy, was I glad I allowed plenty of time!...Storm Eowyn had big plans. Two fallen trees temporarily blocked the way, leaving me waiting as tree surgeons worked to clear the route. Watching the storm rage outside my car window, I couldn’t help but marvel at the dramatic skies, and scary movement in the trees - nature was painting its own portrait, one that mirrored the intensity of the day.
Myself and Max liaised subtly during my time at The Inn On The Lake, Ullswater, to ensure a smooth and successful proposal, even given the ridiculously windy conditions.

Why Ullswater?
Max’s choice to propose at Ullswater was no accident. “I knew Georgia loved the Lakes. It’s so calming and relaxing, and the scenery is beautiful. We’ve explored different parts of the Lake District together, but Ullswater was new for both of us. Now, it holds a very special place in our hearts.”
It was clear the Lake District wasn’t just a picturesque setting for this couple - it was a canvas for their story and future together.
Enjoying a coffee and working, I watched as the wind swept the water out of the lake in a mysterious yet charming manor, only displaying the power of the day ahead.

It was time...
The weather marginally improved, so I gave Max the nod. Upon leaving the building I passed Georgia on the doorstep, and said, 'Gosh, you're brave out here'. She smiled, I then added, 'says me heading out to photograph the views'. She laughed.
After around 15 minutes of me braving the storm, Max and Georgia headed out, very much taking in all that was around them.
From a distance I saw them stop and admire the beautiful view from the Inn on The Lakes grounds. Max wasn't rushing into this proposal and he certainly did not want his future fiancé to see it coming.
Then!...In a blink of an eye, he was down on one knee. Georgia still unaware I was photographing the moment.
SHE SAID YES!

Beam...
The beam on Georgias face was priceless, and exactly why I step up and cover such occasions.
A few tears of joy were shed and that stunning diamond ring was securely on her finger. They are engaged.
Allowing them to embrace the precious moment, I didn't rush over. Being a photographer, I believe, it is as important for those to be present in the moment and not pulled away for force photographs.

A Love Story Rooted in Simplicity...
The couple’s story began on Hinge (many do these days!), where a few chats blossomed into a memorable first date. “We went to a local pub,” Georgia shared, “and sang and danced to an acoustic singer playing all our favorite songs.” Their connection was instant, built on a shared love of music, adventure, and time spent together.
When I asked about their favourite thing to do, their answer was as genuine as they are: “We love going on holiday, weekends away, or just relaxing in spa hotels or glamping pods in the Lakes. Sometimes we mix it up with lively nights out, but mostly, we just love spending quality time together and with our family and friends.”

The Portrait Session...
Once the couple had taken a breath, I introduced myself the Georgia and congratulated them both. I welcomed them to take a wonder around, allowing me to document this special moment for them. I could tell Georgia was still taken aback by it all - bless her!
Despite the storm, Ullswater delivered its signature beauty, albeit with an added drama. The Inn on The Lake provided a cozy haven, its grounds overlooking the turbulent waters and windswept hills. Max and Georgia embraced the weather with surprising enthusiasm, leaning into the gusts of wind, happily getting on the ground and laughing as they couldn't control anything now.
The session felt like a metaphor for their relationship - finding joy and connection, even in life’s storms. The candid moments we captured were a testament to their bond, their shared laughter, and the calm they find in each other’s company.

Together...
We worked together to capture relaxed photographs that really displayed Max and Georgias 3 year relationship - connected, reliable and able to survive any storm.
Georgia was wonderful at showing off her new diamond, and I don't blame her. It was simple yet stunning and so fitting for this special day.
As our time together came to an end, the couple headed inside to enjoy a drink and most importantly video call their friends and family with their joyous news. They kindly welcomed me to enjoy a drink with them, demonstrating what a lovely pair they are! I declined, I as valued this was their special moment as a couple.

Journey...
Some journeys are worth taking, and I am glad I made this one for this genuine couple, despite the weather conditions.
Driving home after the session, I reflected on the day. I also spotted off at Kirkstone pass to have a moment to myself and enjoy the wild wind on my face. Often my work is heavily emotional, and I need a moment to process it. Kirkstone pass, was perfect! I also captured some lovely Belted Galloway calves, sheltering. The wind swept through its ginger locks similar to Georgia and mine - nature is all its glory
.
Storm Eowyn may have thrown challenges our way, but it also added a layer of authenticity to the experience. Max and Georgia’s love shone through, undeterred by the weather, and I felt privileged to capture such a special moment in their journey.
Ullswater, with its wild beauty and emotional significance, proved the perfect backdrop for their story. And for me, it was a reminder that sometimes, the most unexpected circumstances create the most meaningful memories.
