If you’re searching for an autumn wedding at Holesfoot Penrith, Andy and Clare’s October celebration is the perfect inspiration.

On 18th October 2023 - exactly 13 years to the day they first got together - Andy and Clare Butler chose to say “I do” at Holesfoot. Unlucky for some, perhaps - but for them, it felt beautifully meant to be.

Having known Clare for years, I felt incredibly blessed when she asked me to photograph her wedding day. Capturing a love story you’ve witnessed grow over time is something truly special. And this one? It was personal, dainty yet detailed, relaxed yet full of theatrical fun. Not to mention set against one of Cumbria’s most idyllic private country house wedding venues.

Why Holesfoot Was the Perfect Wedding Venue in Cumbria

When I asked Clare why they chose Holesfoot, her answer was simple:

“It instantly felt like home — just a very beautiful, slightly grander version of it.”

As a blended family, togetherness was at the heart of their plans. They didn’t want anything overly formal or staged. They wanted cosy. Warm. Relaxed. A place where their “little tribe” and favourite people could stay, settle in and celebrate across the entire three days.

Holesfoot offers exactly that. Exclusive use of a Georgian country house set within private grounds, with a lake with a jetty, mature trees and rolling lawns creating the most stunning autumnal backdrop. The house itself is elegant but welcoming; grand yet intimate. Guests can stay onsite, turning the wedding into a true homely house party experience.

Liv and the team understood their vision perfectly: “cosy but with a little bit of crazy.” Once their anniversary date and their photographer (me) were available, everything fell into place.

Preparing for a family fun filled day and a wedding...

Upon arriving at Holesfoot, I knew as a photographer this was going to be prioritising family fun, and the wedding was only to consolidate what the family already had. Love, loyalty, and laughter.

Clare prepared with Tracey Tennant Hair and Blusch Bridal, both wedding suppliers that I enjoy working alongside and we all have a lot of chit-chat. On this occasion, we all felt like one huge family in that bridal suite. All suppliers and all the bridal party were chatting like the best of friends as if we'd all known each other for years. I mean, who doesn't want a calm bridal prep like that(!?)
Highly recommended!

Delightful Garden Ceremony at Holesfoot...

True to British October form, there were Plans A, B and C for the ceremony location, including the main house, the barn, or outdoors. Thankfully, the rain cleared. Which was music to my ears as a photographer, given I love an outdoor wedding ceremony.

The ceremony took place in the Holesfoot garden, with wooden benches arranged on the lawn and autumn trees glowing in burnt orange, reds and golden tones behind them. Clare walked down the aisle to their shared football anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” a moment that perfectly reflected their personality this was heartfelt, slightly unconventional, and completely them.

One of my favourite frames from the day? Mr Mischeif, Fifey, giving Clare a last-minute shower in the bath moments before she stepped onto the aisle. The natural kind on chaos and joy I love to capture.

The registrar made a beautiful comment during the ceremony, highlighting how centred the day felt around family. He spoke about the way they had blended their family so thoughtfully and encouraged them to give themselves credit. That moment truly stayed with Clare.

Clare expressed, beyond that, just looking around and seeing our big’uns as witnesses, Maid of Honour and Best Man, our littles as bridesmaid and page boy, and all our favourite people in one place — it felt everything, emotional and completely us.

An Informal, Fun-Filled Wedding Celebration

After the garden ceremony, the day unfolded exactly as they’d hoped, totally informal, relaxed and full of laughter.

Guests spilled onto the lawns with drinks in hand. Children ran freely. Conversations drifted between the house and gardens. The atmosphere felt like a big family Sunday gathering — just with better outfits and a bridal gown.

Speaking of Sunday… They served a huge Sunday lunch, on this Wednesday, because why not!

As Clare said, it’s everyone’s favourite meal.
Clearly this celebration was focused on family, friends and what they all loved!

Details for storytelling...

From the beginning this was a dainty yet detailed delight. With Birdhouse197 supplying on theme gothic styled wedding stationery, setting the tone for all as to what was to come.
Nevertheless, not all was dark and gloomy!

Clares dress with a kick of sparkle and perfectly white, added that sprinkling of bright and cheerful, which echoed the guests energy perfectly.

The tablescapes and floral work by Jemma Khan Studio and Willow and Fig The Lakes, brought the entire autumnal vision to life. Rich burgundies, soft blush tones, muted greens and textured foliage were layered along the tables. Tall brass candlesticks added height and drama, their flickering flames reflecting warmly against the room’s interiors.

The styling struck that perfect balance, dainty yet impactful. Romantic but not overly polished. The flowers felt abundant and seasonal, echoing the colours outside while elevating the interior space into something cinematic and atmospheric.

Decor by Willow and Fig in the Lakes complemented the florals beautifully, enhancing the warm, candlelit aesthetic that carried into the evening.

Couple Portraits at Holesfoot on an Autumn day...

As a photographer, no matter how family orientated and relaxed this joyous occasion was, we were not going to miss out on that wonderful canvas in keeping with the styling on the day.
Andy and Clare explored the grounds, including the woodland area with cool orange smoke grenades. We took the opportunity to use all the Lake District wedding venue had to offer, the jetty over the water, the old drive gateways, the stunning house itself.

This was part of telling their story, connected, real and absolutely down-to-earth. My ideal clients! We avoided heavily posed portraits and simply had fun, moments of madness and silly giggles.

“Cosy But With a Little Bit of Crazy” – The Murder Mystery Evening

If you’re looking for unique wedding entertainment ideas in Cumbria, this is your sign.

Instead of a traditional evening disco, Andy and Clare hosted a full murder mystery night led by Highly Suspect.

Guests received their characters in advance and arrived fully committed costumes, dramatic accents, elaborate backstories and plenty of fizz. What unfolded was theatrical chaos in the very best way.

Holesfoot proved the ideal setting for it with multiple rooms to explore. The country house atmosphere, candlelight, and intimate dining spaces created the perfect backdrop for intrigue and playful suspicion. It felt less like a wedding reception and more like a giant, immersive family dinner party.

There was laughter. There were accusations. There were wildly over-the-top performances. And there was so much joy.

It rounded off the day exactly as it began, perfectly centred on family, connection and shared experience.

A Wedding Rooted in Family

When asked what the most memorable part of the day was, Clare didn’t hesitate.

It wasn’t just one moment, it was looking around and seeing everyone they love in one place. Their blended family standing together. Their children playing such important roles. The sense of unity and pride.

They wouldn’t change a thing.

And honestly(?), as a professional photographer. Neither would I.
