Simon & Jo’s Wild Elopement: From Gretna Green to Grey Mare’s Tail

Some weddings are grand, traditional affairs. Others throw caution to the wind, embracing spontaneity, adventure, and the raw beauty of the wild outdoors. Simon and Jo’s elopement was exactly that - bold, carefree, and full of life. Their story unfolded in two unforgettable locations: a heartfelt ceremony at Gretna Green, followed by a breathtaking couple’s shoot along the A708, leading up to the satisfying scenery surrounding the Grey Mare’s Tail.

This wasn’t just an elopement; it was a celebration of their journey, set against some of Scotland’s most awe-inspiring landscapes.

Why Jo & Simon Chose Me as Their Photographer

Jo and Simon found me the way many couples do - through Instagram and word of mouth. But for Jo, it wasn’t just about finding any wedding photographer. She wanted someone whose style, approach, and personality aligned perfectly with their vision.

Jo shared her thoughts on why she booked me:
"I chose you, Clare, as I viewed many photographers on Instagram and spoke to old contacts, but your photos are next level. The colours, the style, the way you capture your subjects, and the fact that you make everyone look utterly gorgeous.

I also liked the fact that you match clients and only work with those who align - that's how I work in life too! As we love the outdoors and our walks and nature have been a big part of our journey, I knew you would find us the best location, and you did! Mountains and water - our two favourite things!"

For Jo and Simon, this wasn’t just about pretty pictures. They wanted a photographer who understood them, who shared their love for adventure, and who could bring their vision to life.

Jo told me "As we were only planning the wedding in one month, we had a limited budget. We wanted to elope and save up for a family/friend blessing in 2026. I loved the fact you were transparent in your pricing - and yes, we were cheap skates for this elopement, so your hourly service was just perfect!"

They wanted something authentic, relaxed, and fun—and that’s exactly what we created together.

Jo continued to say, "I felt like we instantly connected with you, and whilst we have only seen the highlights so far, they are just amazing! I have seriously never looked so good in photos!! The other nice thing is that you totally captured us as a couple and displayed the fun we have together. The shoot was so much fun! You were also so patient whilst we stopped to get food and were so accommodating with us getting the best shots. We would definitely love you to do next year for us!!"

From Online Dating Disaster to a Love Written in the Stars

Jo never imagined she would find love again after a 12-year marriage, let alone walk down the aisle once more. Nevertheless, life has a way of surprising us when we least expect it.

Jo explained to me, "I did a bit of internet dating on Bumble, and it was a disaster! I didn’t even get to a date. I was ghosted, stood up, and got so jaded with it all - it completely destroyed my confidence and patience!" - To which I fully understand her difficulties!

For months, Jo navigated the frustrating world of online dating, feeling disheartened as she searched for a meaningful connection. She had been looking for men her own age (47+), but just as she was about to give up, she decided to lower the age range for a laugh - to 35+.

And that’s when she found Simon. Twelve years her junior, yet instantly intriguing.
"I fancied him straight away. We swiped each other and started chatting."

The timing was uncanny - it was the midst of the pandemic, and both Jo and Simon had their doubts about the world’s unfolding events. Their conversations flowed effortlessly, with hours spent on the phone each night, discussing everything from personal philosophies to their wildest dreams. Though Simon was in Oxford with his parents and Jo was in Gloucestershire with her daughter, the miles between them meant nothing. They had found something rare - a connection that just made sense. Something which I hope one day I will stumble across!

But fate tested Jo’s patience one last time before sealing the deal.

"Simon is terrible with time, and on our first dinner date, he kept me waiting 20 minutes. I thought I had been stood up again! I took a swig of red wine, about to leave because I couldn’t bear everyone watching me with pity. But just as I was ready to walk, Simon finally strolled in. As soon as he sat down, we hit it off, and something told me to stay."

The evening stretched on, conversation flowing so naturally that they lost track of time. The entire restaurant emptied out, and the staff even stayed late just for them. When they finally said their goodbyes outside, they hugged - not just any hug, but one that felt like home.

"Our ethereal hugs have always been a huge part of our story."

A Ceremony Steeped in History: Gretna Green

Eloping at Gretna Green is like stepping into a centuries-old tradition of love and defiance. For over 250 years, couples have run away to this small Scottish village to wed under its legendary blacksmith’s anvil. Simon and Jo embraced this rich history, exchanging vows in an intimate, deeply personal ceremony.

The moment was simple yet profound - just the two of them, wrapped up in the emotion of the day, speaking words that bound them together for life. There were no distractions, no pressures, just love in its rawest form.

With the ceremony complete and the legalities sorted, it was time to hit the road for the real adventure.

The Drive of a Lifetime: A708 to Grey Mare’s Tail

For me, few roads stir the soul like the A708. Winding its way through the heart of the Scottish Borders, this route is a photographer’s dream and a haven for anyone who loves the great outdoors.

I’ve always wanted to travel this road, just to take in the scenery. The further you drive, the more the world seems to slow down, giving way to endless rolling hills, dramatic cliffs, and wild, untouched landscapes. It’s the perfect mix of beauty and adventure, setting the tone for what was to come.

The National Trust car park is just £4.00 for the day, which isn't bad for full day parking and an adventure. The National Trust request a donation from all professional photographers - given I regularly 'invest' in the National Trust I chose not to do so on this visit.

As we made our way toward Grey Mare’s Tail, Simon and Jo couldn’t stop taking it all in, and rightly so. This was exactly what they had envisioned - no stress, no rigid timelines, just the freedom to celebrate their love on their own terms.

Portraits in the Wild: Grey Mare’s Tail

Arriving at Grey Mare’s Tail, we were greeted by one of the most spectacular natural wonders in Scotland. This 60-meter waterfall plunges down a steep rock face, framed by rugged hills and vast open skies. It’s wild. It’s dramatic. And it’s the perfect place for an elopement shoot.

Simon and Jo, still buzzing from their ceremony, wasted no time embracing the landscape. Some couples might be hesitant about hiking in their wedding attire, but not these two. They laughed as the wind whipped through Jo’s hair, hiked up rocky trails hand in hand, and let the sheer exhilaration of the moment take over. With the waterfall cascading behind them, Simon and Jo stood close, hands intertwined, faces lit with emotion.

Their energy was infectious. They weren’t just posing for photos - they were living their adventure. Climbing up, shear drops, standing on cliff edges, and embracing each other naturally, they embodied everything a wild elopement should be.

We took time for couple portraits, using the soft skies and rugged scenery to our advantage. To my joy, we were blessed with a perfect bright overcast afternoon, crafting the perfect consistent light box for me to work under. Jo’s dress blew in the wind, Simon wrapped her in his arms, and together they looked like they belonged in this wild, untamed place.

We stood for a moment, taking it all in. The sound of the waterfall thundered in the distance, the wind tugged at our hair, and the hills stretched endlessly around us. It was raw, untamed beauty at its finest.

We took breaks when needed - taking in the moment, chatting about life, travel, and the incredible journey they were on. It was unhurried, exactly how an elopement should feel.

Flowing with the environment

Jo's stunning flowing dress was the perfect blend of elegance and adventure, with a high slit that allowed for movement and spontaneity, complemented by a pair of sturdy hiking boots. The detachable sleeve added a layer of practicality, ready for whatever the weather might throw their way. Her dress captured the spirit of their adventurous day, while still maintaining a touch of grace.

Simon’s blue suit was a bold contrast to the rugged, earthy backdrop of Scotland, bringing a modern and energetic flair that matched the couple’s dynamic energy.

Together, their outfits were a perfect reflection of their spirited elopement.

Heartfelt ending

As we captured the final moments of their shoot. With the waterfall roaring in the distance and the vastness of the Scottish landscape stretching out before them, Simon and Jo paused for a moment to appreciate their moment.

Their elopement wasn’t just about getting married. It was about celebrating their love in a way that felt true to them, free from expectations and full of adventure.

As we packed up, our conversations opened up to the couples intentions for their blessing next year in Wales. They turned to each other with the same excitement they had at the start of the day, because this wasn’t just the end of an elopement - it was the beginning of a lifetime of adventure together.

I feel blessed Jo and Simon found me and they resonated with my approach, style and energy. Meeting like minded couples and connecting with them is one of the reasons I wholehearted love my job - something I appreciate very few can say.

As I continue to edit their lovely gallery, here is hoping I get to work with them both in the future!
